The Chapel of Senhor da Praça is located in Rates, a village in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim. It is situated in Praça dos Forais, a place whose name suggests a connection to the village's history. Its location in a square provides an environment of tranquility and a subtle centrality, where visitors can appreciate the urban surroundings.
This chapel, dating back to 1745, is a remarkable example of Baroque architecture. Although of modest size, its structure and details reflect the typical characteristics of the period in which it was built. Its apparent simplicity invites careful observation, revealing the expressiveness and elegance inherent to the Baroque style.
In 2006, during restoration work inside the Chapel of Senhor da Praça, a discovery of great artistic relevance was made: a 17th-century painting depicting a calvary, was revealed on a side altarpiece. This altarpiece, and the artwork it concealed, have a unique history, as they were transferred to this location in 1939. Originally, they were part of the Church of São Pedro de Rates, being rehomed in the Chapel of Senhor da Praça during a church rehabilitation process aimed at preserving its Romanesque elements, while transferring others from different eras. This piece adds significant historical and artistic value to the chapel's heritage.
