It is situated at the highest point of the municipality, at an altitude of 255 meters, on a geological formation of schist. The site is a clearing at the top of the hill, surrounded by a forest area where eucalyptus predominates. The chapel is oriented to the west, and its churchyard offers a wide view of the surrounding landscape.

It is possible to observe the outlines of the city of Porto, Sameiro in Braga, Santa Justa in Valongo, and Monte Crasto in Gondomar. This chapel and the hill it sits on share the name of Archangel Saint Michael, a central figure of an ancient devotion. The pilgrimage in honor of São Miguel-o-Anjo, traditionally celebrated on September 29th or the following Sunday, imbues the site with an atmosphere of faith and tradition. History tells that, in the past, fishermen from the town of Matosinhos would climb this hill to give thanks for the protection the Angel granted them on their sea voyages. The hill also served as a point of reference for them, a true natural "lighthouse," guiding them on their return from their fishing expeditions.
