The Chapel of Saint Andrew is located in Aver-o-Mar, a coastal area of Póvoa de Varzim. Positioned in front of the beach, and adjacent to the rock known as Penedo do Santo, the chapel is integrated into an environment where the presence of the ocean and fishing traditions are central elements. Its location offers a perspective of the sea, reflecting this community's strong connection to maritime activity.
This small temple is a landmark of the deep connection between the people of Póvoa de Varzim and the sea. Dedicated to Saint Andrew, traditionally associated with fishermen as their patron saint, the chapel is a place of faith and a spiritual point of reference for seafarers. Popular belief holds that Saint Andrew has the power to rescue the souls of those who perish by drowning, "fishing" them from the depths. The chapel serves as a space where the encomendação das almas (commendation of souls) takes place, an act of prayer and remembrance for those lost at sea.
Devotion to Saint Andrew gains particular relevance during the annual festivities held at the end of November. During these days, the Chapel of Saint Andrew becomes the center of an ancient ritual. Groups of pilgrims, sometimes dressed in dark cloaks and holding lanterns, walk along the beach towards the hermitage, chanting songs that echo along the coast. Upon arrival, they circle the chapel in a symbolic gesture known as "Ponto das almas" (Point of Souls), a moment charged with meaning that honors the memory of those taken by the sea and expresses the identity and faith of the local community.
