Architecture and Style

This religious temple is a notable example of the eclectic architecture of the late 19th century, reflecting the diversity of artistic influences of the time. Its main façade, distinct for its two-plane division, is ornamented with various types of tiles, giving it a unique and striking visual identity. In the first plane, a gabled porch stands out, flanked by narrow and elongated openings. The second plane, aligned with the porch, features three openings topped by ogival arches and interspersed with Ionic-style columns. The composition culminates in a small bell tower in the form of a templet, which rises above the truncated gable.

A Look at History

The history of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos dates back to the late 19th century, with its origins linked to the founding of a religious fraternity. The construction of the temple began around 1896, driven by the growing community that sought its own, larger space for worship. Over the years, the chapel underwent various vicissitudes, including periods of closure and reopening, reflecting the historical events of the country. Its interior underwent adaptations and renovations over time, yet remaining a place of faith and devotion for the inhabitants of the region.

Interior Details and Materials

Inside the chapel, its longitudinal plan develops through a main nave that leads to the chancel and a sacristy. The structure is predominantly made of granite ashlar, visible in elements such as walls, columns, and window frames, while the remaining surfaces are plastered and painted white. The flooring combines the warmth of wooden floorboards with the robustness of granite slabs. The side altarpieces and the main altarpiece, as well as the pulpit, reveal the richness of polychrome and gilded carving. The openings are adorned with stained-glass windows, which allow soft, colored light to enter, creating an atmosphere of serenity and reflection. A statue of Saint Francis on the exterior complements the ensemble, inviting peace and contemplation.
