The Bandstand and Its Art

One of the most striking elements of the Saint John the Baptist Garden is its Parish Bandstand, recognized as being of Municipal Value since 1980. Built in 1907 by Serralharia Artística do Corvo, this bandstand stands out for its distinct Art Nouveau style. With an octagonal plan and approximately six meters in diameter, its base is made of granite, covered with tiles, and the roof is supported by an artistically crafted iron structure. Inside, the dome is decorated with painted medallions and stylized ornaments, revealing a clear influence of Italian design and evoking the opulence of stately halls.

A Curious History

The construction of the Parish Bandstand is accompanied by a peculiar story that lends it additional cultural interest. Its construction, in 1907, was surprisingly financed thanks to the cunning of a young man named João Oliveira. He managed to persuade his father, António Lopes da Costa, to finance the work over two years, by posing as a fortunate Brazilian emigrant through elaborate correspondence. This ingenious stratagem culminated in the inauguration of the bandstand on June 24, 1907, making it a testament to the community's creativity and determination.
