The Chapel of Santa Isabel stands in the Outeiro area, in the parish of Canelas, Vila Nova de Gaia. This location is situated within an urban area, yet its surroundings still retain features of a rural landscape, characterized by the presence of single-family homes and cultivated land.
The chapel is located on flat ground, adjacent to other buildings, and easily accessible from the public road. Its position offers a glimpse of the tranquility that defines this part of Canelas, inviting a moment of calm and serene observation.
This chapel, also known as the Old Chapel of Santa Isabel, has its roots firmly established in the 19th century. Its construction dates back to 1868, a date engraved on the lintel of the main door, bearing witness to its age and historical importance to the local community.
Originally dedicated to religious worship, the chapel served as a place of devotion for many years. However, throughout the 20th century, its function evolved. Currently, the space is used for catechism and storage purposes, reflecting the transformations and adaptations that religious buildings can undergo to continue serving the community in other ways.
The Chapel of Santa Isabel stands out for its simple and functional architecture, which evokes the aesthetic of its time. It has a rectangular plan and a gabled roof, with discreet eaves. The facades are rendered and painted white, adorned with plinths, quoins, and friezes that give a subtle definition to the building.
The main facade, facing southeast, is topped by a gable, where a Latin cross rises at the apex. The portal, with a straight lintel, is framed by a prominent molding. Inside, the walls and flat ceiling, also white, contribute to a secluded atmosphere. One of the points of interest within is a perfect arch niche on the end wall, where the image of the patron saint once rested, decorated with a wooden frame painted white and gold. Natural light is scarce, coming from a small slit in the side facade, which accentuates the introspective atmosphere of the place.
