The Bela Vista GNR Barracks is located on Rua da Lameira de Cima, in the parish of Campanhã, Porto. It is situated in an elevated area, offering a panoramic view of the city.
This building was constructed in the early 20th century, initially serving as an educational establishment. The Instituto Moderno, a college that operated for four years, was considered advanced for its time, with modern and hygienic facilities.
The barracks was designed by architect José Teixeira Lopes and is notable for its use of reinforced concrete, being one of the first buildings in the city to adopt this technique. The structure includes granite walls, "Marseilles" type tile roofs, and well-lit interior spaces.
Currently, the space houses the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) barracks and is an important security point in the region.
The building is surrounded by green areas that resist urbanization, offering a pleasant and tranquil environment.
The barracks is considered a Monument of Public Interest, recognized for its historical and architectural relevance.
It can be easily reached by the streets of São Roque da Lameira and Lameira de Cima, with good connections to public transport.
Although internal access to the barracks may be restricted, the surrounding area offers the opportunity to appreciate the architecture and the beauty of the gardens that surround it.
