The Palácio do Freixo is located in Campanhã, a parish of Porto, Portugal, near the Douro River.
The Quinta do Freixo was established in the 17th century. The palace was built by Canon D. Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha in the 18th century, with the help of the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. The building was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
The palace went through several changes of ownership. After several decades of abandonment, it was acquired by the Porto City Council in 1986 and restored between 2000 and 2003. Currently, it houses the Pousada do Freixo, one of the largest in Portugal.
The palace is an excellent example of Baroque architecture, with unique features of Nasoni. Its structure features a rectangular plan with turrets at each corner, staircases, and undulating walls.
The space is surrounded by beautiful gardens inspired by the Italian style, with sculptures and a stunning view of the Douro River.
The interior is richly decorated, with frescoes and stucco ceilings. Many of the artistic elements were created by Nasoni himself, including allegorical paintings.
The Palácio do Freixo has been the setting for various events and cultural activities since its requalification.
Tourists can explore the palace and gardens, appreciate the architecture and art, and enjoy the river view.
