Quinta da Revolta, also known as Horto do Freixo, is located in Campanhã, Porto, next to the Tinto River.
Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the name "Revolta" (Revolt) may be linked to a historical event that occurred nearby.
The Quinta was initially a summer house for the Viscounts of Balsemão, an important family from Porto. In the 19th century, it was sold to José Duarte de Oliveira, and then, in 1918, acquired by Alfredo Moreira da Silva, a horticulturist, whose family still owns the property.
The main house is simple, with two floors and an "L" shaped floor plan, surrounded by box gardens. It also has a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of Conception), highlighting the decorative tiles inside. The entrance is marked by a gate with the coat of arms of the Viscounts of Balsemão.
Currently, the property houses one of the most recognized nurseries in the city of Porto, preserving the gardening tradition of the family that acquired it. It is a reference for those interested in plants and gardening.
There is a project under development to integrate Quinta da Revolta into the Parque Oriental da Cidade (Eastern Park of the City), transforming it into a private inn within this new green area.
