Founded in 1884 in response to the risk of cholera. Initially a temporary hospital, it was created to face outbreaks of contagious diseases.
Over the years, it reopened several times to treat outbreaks of plague, smallpox, typhus, and other serious diseases that affected Porto.
For much of its existence, it was the main Portuguese hospital for the treatment of infectious and respiratory diseases, standing out in the fight against tuberculosis and HIV.
In 1914, it adopted the name "Hospital Joaquim Urbano," in honor of its first director, an important doctor in the area of public health.
Since 2016, the hospital has ceased to function as a health center. Currently, it hosts social support initiatives, such as a support center for the homeless.
Located in Bonfim, Porto, it is a place of historical relevance for those interested in the evolution of public health in the country.
