The Massarelos Pottery Factory was one of the oldest in Northern Portugal, established in 1766 by Manuel Duarte Silva.
Initially, the factory used heather as fuel in the kilns and produced simple decorative pieces.
Between 1819 and 1845, the factory was leased to the Rocha Soares family and expanded production to include tiles and sanitary ware.
After a fire in 1920, production was transferred to Bonfim, near the Douro River, close to the D. Maria Pia Bridge.
On the factory's original site, on Rua da Restauração, there is now an apartment building that retains some details of the old facade.
The factory in Bonfim was demolished to make way for the construction of the São João Bridge, leaving only two kilns and the chimney as a memory of the industrial past.
