Vila do Conde and Azurara have medieval origins and developed as autonomous towns, situated on the banks of the Ave River. Azurara was noted for its historical importance, especially in the 15th century, when it became independent from the parish of Árvore.
Vila do Conde boasts several notable buildings, including the Church and Monastery of Santa Clara, the Mother Church of São João, and the Town Hall. Azurara stands out for its Parish Church, the Pillory, and the Casa da Praça (Square House).
Vila do Conde is characterized by a complex urban layout, with two main poles: Monte de Santa Clara and the riverside area. Azurara, in contrast, has a simpler structure, centered on the Estrada Velha do Porto (Old Porto Road).
Until the 17th century, Azurara prospered due to river trade and its proximity to the sea. However, Vila do Conde began to eclipse Azurara, becoming the commercial center of the region.
Both locations have a rich cultural legacy, reflected in their festivities, gastronomy, and architecture, which attract tourists in search of authentic experiences.
Located next to the Ave River, the historical areas offer pleasant views and opportunities for walks along the water, ideal for those who appreciate nature.
Visitors can explore the stone streets, historical squares, and chapels, as well as enjoy the local hospitality in typical cafes and restaurants.
