The Audience Stone, located in Quintã, Avintes (Vila Nova de Gaia), is a historic outdoor court dating back to the 18th century. It is a granite structure, consisting of a table and three stone benches, used for public trials.
Dating from 1742, the Audience Stone served as a place to resolve local disputes and administer justice. These popular trials were led by a judge, who held a red rod, a symbol of authority, and were attended by two officials (the scribe and the bailiff).
This court represented the autonomy and local power of Avintes. Here, sentences were respected, without the need to resort to more distant courts, which reinforced the independence of the community.
In 1946, the Audience Stone was classified as a Property of Public Interest, which guaranteed its official protection. Over the years, several conservation interventions have been carried out to maintain this historical landmark.
Next to the Audience Stone stood a centuries-old oak tree, possibly from the same era as the court. Unfortunately, in 1961, a storm brought down this ancient tree, which was later replaced by a new oak tree, preserving the symbolism of the site.
In 1942, on the bicentennial of the court, ethnographic celebrations were held with folk groups and parades that celebrated local traditions. Currently, the monument is still a landmark and celebrates the memory of justice and the community of Avintes.
In 2022, a garden was created around the Audience Stone, increasing the public area and enhancing the historical space, now with a more pleasant environment for visitors.
