The Aqueduct of Vila do Conde extends through the urban and rural landscape, marking the town with its imposing presence. Its most visible and well-preserved section is found in the area known as "Zona do Hospital," near where the Monastery of Santa Clara, its original destination, once stood. As you walk through the area, you can observe its succession of granite arches, punctuating the surroundings and offering interesting perspectives of the region's historical architecture.
This aqueduct is an impressive structure from the 17th and 18th centuries, designed to transport water from distant springs to the center of Vila do Conde. It stands out as one of the most extensive aqueducts in Portugal, originally planned with a grand number of arches, spoken of as almost a thousand, with a significant part of this impressive network visible today. Built in robust exposed granite, its arches exhibit an elegance that varies in height and span, adapting to the terrain.
The construction of the aqueduct was motivated by a vital need: the supply of potable water to the Monastery of Santa Clara, which, despite its location by the Ave River, faced constant challenges in obtaining pure water. After a first failed attempt in the 17th century, due to errors in calculating the gradient, the work was restarted and completed in the early 18th century. The arrival of water at the monastery was an event of such significance that it was celebrated with great pomp, demonstrating the fundamental importance of this infrastructure for conventual life at the time.
Currently classified as a National Monument, the Aqueduct of Vila do Conde is not only a testament to ancient engineering but also a living element in the town's landscape. Its lasting presence lends a unique character to the places it passes through, serving as a cultural landmark. The enhancement of the public space adjacent to the aqueduct has been recognized, highlighting its harmonious integration into the urban environment and its importance as heritage to be preserved.
