The Chapel of São Sebastião is located in the town of Alpendurada, part of the union of parishes of Alpendorada, Várzea, and Torrão, in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses. It is situated on the north bank of the Douro River, in a landscape characteristic of this region, marked by steep slopes and granite outcrops, which give it a natural setting of particular beauty and serenity.
Although dedicated to Saint Sebastian, this small chapel was, traditionally, a place of great devotion to Saint Blaise. This saint was sought after by the faithful who travelled there to ask for the cure of throat ailments, expressing their faith through prayers and promises, hoping to alleviate their suffering.
The chapel is the setting for an ancient legend connected to Saint Blaise. It is told that the saint, on his return to the city, encountered a woman whose son was suffering from a fishbone stuck in his throat and, after his prayers, the boy miraculously recovered. This legend reflects the popular belief in Saint Blaise's healing power, which was celebrated annually on February 3rd with a feast that mobilized the community; although it no longer takes place today, it remains alive in local memory.
Next to the Chapel of São Sebastião, there is a small niche dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima, which complements the devotional character of the place. This space invites a moment of pause and reflection, providing a tranquil environment for those seeking an instant of peace, away from the hustle, and wishing to appreciate the simplicity and the historical and religious significance of the edifice.
