The Porto Military Espaldão, also known as the Ervilha Espaldão, is located in the parish of Aldoar, in the municipality of Porto, Portugal. Today, it is situated in an urban residential area.
This site dates back to the Portuguese Civil War (1828-1834) and served as a military structure. It was built by the troops of Miguel I to house artillery that would attack the liberal forces led by Pedro IV, who invaded Porto in 1832.
The espaldão was considered a fortification of great importance, and was the scene of intense fighting. On January 24, 1833, it was occupied by liberal troops under the command of General Jean-Baptiste Solignac.
In 2020, an urbanization project in the area led to archaeological studies that revealed vestiges of the site's military past. Stone structures were found that served to place artillery pieces.
Today, the old fortification is quite degraded. Erosion and the use of the area as a training zone for motorcyclists have contributed to its deterioration, reducing it to small granite walls and earth trenches.
Since January 2005, the Porto Military Espaldão has had no legal protection, which raises concerns about the preservation of the site.
