Located in the parish of Airães, municipality of Felgueiras, the Church of Santa Maria de Airães is part of the Romanesque Route.
It was recognized as a National Monument in 1977.
The church is an example of Romanesque architecture, with influences from the Gothic style, reflecting the mix of styles typical of the era in the region.
Although there are references to the church in the 11th century, the current structure dates from the late 13th or early 14th century.
The chancel and the main portal are parts that preserve the original Romanesque characteristics.
Over the years, the church has undergone several changes, mainly in the Baroque period, with the addition of side naves and ornamentation in gilded wood carvings and tiles.
Inside the church, religious sculptures and a Rococo-style nativity scene stand out, elements of great artistic interest.
Outside, there are carved stones that suggest the presence of an earlier building, possibly of Roman or Paleo-Christian origin.
