- The parish is first mentioned in ancient documents, in the "Black Book" of the See of Coimbra, as "sanctam mariam de aquas sanctas".
- The current church was built in 1120 and is the only vestige of the old convent founded in 974, which remained until the 19th century.
- A secular landmark was found in a private house, believed to be from the 13th or 14th century.
- Classified as a National Monument since 1910.

- In the churchyard, next to the cemetery, stand out five monolithic sarcophagi from the Middle Ages, one of them being notable for having a coat of arms and a circular cross carved into it.
