The Anta dos Serrones I stands on a gentle rise on the outskirts of Vila Fernando, in the municipality of Monforte. The monument is located in a completely rural area, surrounded by agricultural fields, which gives it a calm and discreet atmosphere.
From its vantage point, one can enjoy an expansive view over the Alentejo plain, with olive groves and vast fields of grain stretching as far as the eye can see, highlighting the contrast between the dolmen's solidity and the rural landscape.
Dating from the Late Neolithic to the Chalcolithic (c. 5th–3rd millennium BCE), this dolmen was part of a small megalithic necropolis that marked territories and honored collective funerary practices.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1997, it is part of the set of megalithic monuments that document the presence and beliefs of prehistoric communities in Alto Alentejo.
The funerary chamber features four orthostats of pink granite typical of Monforte, only one of which is complete, forming a circular space approximately 3.5 meters in diameter.
Although the original corridor is no longer visible, the perfection of the slab cuts reveals the builders' technical mastery and the symbolic importance attributed to this funerary structure.
Set within a landscape of broad horizons, the dolmen maintains a relationship of sobriety with its agricultural surroundings. The absence of dense shrubs allows for an appreciation of the slabs' form silhouetted against the sky.
The contrast between the warm color of the granite and the golden hue of the nearby grain fields creates a serene visual framework, inviting tranquil contemplation of the monument.
