The Roman Villa of Torre de Palma is located about 5 km from Monforte, in the locality of Vaiamonte, in the municipality of Monforte, Portugal. Access is via an unpaved road from the Torre de Palma Estate.
This Roman villa belonged to an influential family, the Basílios, and was inhabited between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD. During the excavations, several structures were found that show the luxury and grandeur of the site.
The villa had a large residence with mosaics, frescoes and courtyards, as well as service and storage areas. Private baths and areas dedicated to agricultural and production activities were also identified.
One of the most important discoveries was the Paleochristian basilica, dating from the 4th century. This early church had three naves and a baptistery in the shape of a cross of Lorraine, considered one of the most impressive in the Iberian Peninsula.
Very well-preserved geometric mosaics were found at the site, including the famous "mosaic of the stars". Some of the mosaics can be seen at the National Archaeology Museum in Lisbon and the Archaeological Museum of Monforte.
In addition to the main residence, thermal baths and other residential and agricultural buildings were discovered. These elements demonstrate the grandeur of the villa and the sophisticated life that was lived there.
During the excavations, coins, ceramic pieces, glass fragments, Byzantine jewelry, among other objects of historical value, were found. Some of the artifacts suggest trade with other regions, such as Egypt and North Africa.
The Villa de Torre de Palma is one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in the Iberian Peninsula, standing out for its extension and wealth of discoveries.
The site was classified as a National Monument in 1970, recognizing its relevance to the history and culture of Portugal.
