The Roman Bridge of Vila Formosa is located in the area that bears its name, Vila Formosa, part of the locality of Seda, in the municipality of Alter do Chão. Its imposing structure rises over the Ribeira de Seda, in a predominantly rural and serene natural landscape. Its position offers an interesting perspective of the river and the surrounding fields.
This ancient bridge is a remarkable testament to the Roman presence in the Iberian Peninsula. Built during the Roman Empire, it was part of one of the main routes connecting important cities, serving as a crucial crossing point over the Ribeira de Seda. Its historical importance and good state of preservation led to its classification as a National Monument in 1910, recognizing its invaluable heritage value.
The Roman Bridge of Vila Formosa demonstrates the robustness and ingenuity of Roman engineering. Extending for over a hundred meters, the bridge is composed of six large perfect-arch spans, supported by solid pillars built with large stone blocks. The deck, relatively flat, is paved with massive slabs. A notable detail are the "olhais" or openings above the pillars, an ingenious solution to allow water to drain during flood periods, protecting the structure from the force of the current.
For nearly two thousand years, this bridge served the purpose for which it was built: to allow passage. Until the beginning of the 21st century, it was even used by modern road traffic, a testament to the solidity of its original construction. Currently, it is closed to vehicle traffic, which allows visitors to explore it on foot and appreciate the details of its architecture up close, feeling the history that its stones hold. It is considered one of the best-preserved Roman bridges in Portugal.
A visit to the Roman Bridge of Vila Formosa offers not only the contemplation of a historical monument but also the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility of its surroundings. The bridge harmoniously integrates into the riverside landscape, providing a calm environment conducive to observing local nature and enjoying a moment of pause, away from the hustle and bustle.
