The Vila Formosa Bridge is located in the parish of Seda, in the municipality of Alter do Chão, district of Portalegre, Alentejo. The bridge is situated over the Seda stream.
This bridge has been classified as a National Monument since 1910, standing out for its historical and architectural importance.
The Vila Formosa Bridge is an ancient Roman construction that was part of the road that connected Lisbon to Mérida, passing through Pontes de Sor and Alter do Chão. It is considered one of the best preserved of its time in Portugal.
The bridge was part of the EN 369 and was used by automobile traffic until the construction of a new viaduct in 2009. It can be visited via the old route.
Approximately 100 meters long, the bridge is supported by stone pillars and features six perfect arches. It has typical characteristics of Roman bridges, such as eyelets to prevent damage in case of floods, cushioned ashlars and a flat deck with large slabs.
It is a place of interest for tourists who appreciate history and architecture. The bridge provides a unique experience for those who want to learn about Roman heritage in Portugal.
