The Barahona Palace is located in the city of Portalegre, in the parish of Sé and São Lourenço. Its garden is located near the city's castle and Serpa Pinto Square.
Built in 1800 by João Zuzarte Cid, the palace was later acquired by the influential Caldeira de Castel-Branco family. The family was descended from nobles, with ties to the Royal House and the Order of Christ. The building was the residence of several generations until it was sold in the 1980s.
An example of neoclassical civil architecture, the palace stands out for its two turrets, facade with balustrade parapets and an imposing entrance with a curved pediment. It is comparable to the Palácio da Brejoeira, a building of similar style.
Since 1993, the Barahona Palace has housed the Portalegre District Archive, where important historical documents from the region are kept.
The palace was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1982, due to its historical and architectural value.
The interior of the palace features elements of great decorative value, such as painted and metal-moulded ceilings and a staircase with a dome, which stands out for its elegance and use of natural light.
The palace garden, located at the level of the main floor, is divided into three areas, one of which is wooded and has a central pond, functioning as a viewpoint overlooking the surroundings.
