Founded in 1835 by George Robinson, the Robinson Cork Factory is one of the oldest and most important cork factories in the world.
The factory is located in the city of Portalegre, specifically in the parish of Sé, occupying the space of the former Convent of São Francisco, which was a male convent with architecture influenced by the Renaissance style.
The factory was a global reference in the cork industry, playing a crucial role in the region's economy and being a symbol of Portugal's industrial history.
The museum, integrated into the factory, preserves the history of cork, exhibiting documents, products and machinery that tell the evolution of the industry since the 19th century.
Although it was considered the best museum in Europe in 2001, the Cork Museum has been closed since 2009. The Portalegre City Council has made several attempts to acquire the museum, but without success.
Despite the closure of the museum, the factory and its complex continue to be an important industrial and cultural heritage, representing a historical landmark in the city of Portalegre.
