The Convent of Santa Clara is harmoniously integrated into the historic center of Portalegre, in the parish of Sé. This location stands in a tranquil area of the city, providing a serene environment and a calm perspective on the urban surroundings. Its position allows visitors to enjoy the quietude that once characterized monastic life.
The foundation of the Convent of Santa Clara dates back to the 14th century, with its origins pointing to the year 1353. Its institution was an initiative of D. Isabel, daughter of King D. Afonso IV and Queen D. Brites, who destined it for the Order of Saint Clare, whose nuns are known as Poor Clares. Throughout the centuries, the convent witnessed profound historical and social transformations, remaining a relevant center of faith and culture until the extinction of religious orders in Portugal in the 19th century.
The architectural complex of the Convent of Santa Clara is a testament to stylistic evolution over time, presenting an interesting amalgamation of periods. Its most emblematic element is the Gothic cloister, a space of remarkable beauty and historical-artistic value. This cloister, with its two levels and ogival arches, is one of the best-preserved examples of Gothic conventual architecture in the region, offering a fascinating contrast with later interventions in the rest of the building.
The convent church, in turn, predominantly displays the decorative richness of the Baroque. Its interior is profusely adorned with elements in gilded carving, highlighting the imposing main altarpiece, which reflects the opulence and devotion of the era. Inside the church also rest the tombs of its founders and other noble figures who contributed to the convent's history, giving it an additional meaning as a historical pantheon.
