Located in the parish of São Salvador da Aramenha, in the municipality of Marvão, in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park.
Founded at the end of the 1st century BC, the city of Ammaia was an important Roman city in the province of Lusitania, with a relevant role in trade and the exploitation of natural resources, such as quartz and gold.
The city began to decline between the 5th and 9th centuries, being later abandoned, especially after the Arab occupation of the region. Many of the materials from the ruins were reused in constructions in the surrounding area.
The ruins of Ammaia have been classified as a National Monument since 1949.
Visitors can observe parts of the walls, towers, Roman baths, a monumental square, and the main roads, such as the Cardo Maximus, which connected the city center to the Forum. There are also vestiges of a temple and an amphitheater, recently discovered.
On site, there is a museum that displays artifacts discovered in the excavations, providing a deeper insight into life in Ammaia during the Roman period.
Since 1994, several archaeological campaigns have been carried out, revealing more about the structure and importance of Ammaia. The site also serves as an "open laboratory" for European research projects, using modern non-invasive techniques.
