The Atalaião Tower, also known as the Watchtower or Torrejão Bulwark, is located near Portalegre, in a dominant position over the city, at an altitude of about 600 meters, providing an impressive view of the Alentejo region.
The exact origin of the tower is unknown, but it is believed to have been built in the late Middle Ages, probably in the late 13th or early 14th century, as part of Portalegre's defensive system. It was reinforced in the 17th century, during the Restoration War, adapting to new military needs.
The tower has a square plan and is built in masonry, mainly of granite. Although part of the structure has collapsed, elements such as the machicolations (defensive openings) can still be observed in the corners of the building. The interior is in ruins, but it is possible to identify three communicating compartments.
Much of the tower is in ruins, with the collapse of significant parts of the structure, especially on the north facade, which collapsed in 1996. There are traces of plaster on the walls and some defensive elements, such as brick masonry walls.
The tower is located on private property, and access is not allowed. However, the site can be observed from the road that goes to Serra de São Mamede, passing through the Bairro do Atalaião.
Despite its state of disrepair, the Atalaião Tower is a historical-cultural landmark, representing an important vestige of the region's military history. It has been in the process of being classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1985.
Due to its elevated location, the site offers a spectacular view over the city of Portalegre and the surrounding landscape, making it an excellent spot to appreciate the natural beauty of the region.
