Ouguela Castle is located in the old village of Ouguela, in the parish of São João Baptista, in the municipality of Campo Maior, district of Portalegre, Alentejo. It is near the border with Spain and offers views of the Spanish fortification of Alburquerque.
The castle has a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times. Originally, the site was a castro and was later fortified by the Muslims. It was conquered by Christian forces after 1230, and in 1297 it became part of the kingdom of Portugal.
The castle features an irregular hexagonal plan, with walls built of granite and schist stone. It mixes elements of medieval and modern architecture, including bulwarks and towers. The entrance is guarded by towers and a half-bulwark.
During the Restoration of Portugal's Independence, the castle was modernized. In 1644, it was successfully defended from a Spanish attack, highlighting the bravery of the defenders.
Ouguela Castle has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1943. It has been the subject of several conservation and enhancement interventions over the years.
The castle offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and an opportunity to explore Portugal's military history. There is also an ongoing project to enhance the area, including the creation of a museum space and walking trails.
The castle is accessible to the public, allowing visitors to explore its walls and learn more about its fascinating history.
