The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Luz is situated in a tranquil, rural setting, within the Quinta do Brejo area, near the town of Castelo de Vide. The chapel stands in isolation on a flat plain, offering an environment of serenity. In front, a small square, featuring a stone cross, complements the landscape, which stretches across fields dotted with olive trees, bestowing upon the place a harmonious and peaceful atmosphere.
This sanctuary dates back to its foundation in 1609 by Francisco Domingues Henriques. Its predominantly Mannerist architecture is characterized by a longitudinal structure with a single nave, preceded by a galilee. The main facade, facing south, is distinguished by its straight portal and gridded windows, topped by a gable. Above the main entrance, a small panel of old tiles depicting the Virgin announces the name of the place.
Upon entering, visitors are surprised by the interior, where the nave and chancel reveal artistic richness. The walls are almost entirely covered with 17th-century carpet tiles, in vibrant shades of blue, white, and yellow, forming intricate geometric and floral patterns. These tiles also extend along the triumphal arch, creating a remarkable visual continuity. The main altarpiece, in gilded and polychrome wood, displays a Mannerist style and houses several painted panels on board, illustrating religious themes such as the Coronation of the Virgin, the Annunciation, and the Presentation in the Temple. A unique element is the altar frontal, which features tiles with designs of exotic birds and vegetal motifs, signed by the painter Maria Flores in 1924, adding a touch of color and originality.
