The Anta da Cabeçuda is located in a quiet area of the locality of Beirã, in the Pombais zone, within the municipality of Marvão. This ancient monument stands out in the landscape, currently delimited by a wall that serves to protect it and integrate it into its surrounding environment, marking its presence at the transition between rural and residential spaces.
The Anta da Cabeçuda is a megalithic monument, bearing witness to the presence of human communities that inhabited the Marvão region thousands of years ago, during the Neolithic period. These imposing dolmens, constructed with large stone blocks, primarily served as collective tombs. Their existence reveals the complex beliefs and funerary rituals of our ancestors, offering a window into a distant and fascinating past.
The structure of the Anta da Cabeçuda is distinguished by its composition. It features a relatively short access corridor, which leads to a notably regular polygonal chamber. With dimensions of approximately 3.20 meters by 3.60 meters, the geometric perfection of this chamber is a singular aspect, demonstrating the skill and technical knowledge of the populations who erected it.
The Anta da Cabeçuda has been the subject of attention for its conservation. In 1991, the monument underwent a recovery process, aiming to ensure its integrity and visibility for future generations. Currently, it is carefully protected by a wall, a barrier that safeguards this archaeological legacy and maintains it as a lasting point of interest in the landscape of Beirã.
