Located in Santa Maria de Marvão, about 500 meters from the village walls, the cross is near the convent of Nossa Senhora da Estrela, accessible by National Road 246.
This Manueline cross, dating from the late 15th and early 16th centuries, is a remarkable example of late Gothic art, featuring rich decoration that stands out in the landscape.
Composed of a platform with two square steps and a circular base, the cross has a marble column decorated with spiral elements and knots. The capital is equally adorned, supporting a large cross.
The cross is decorated with significant figures: on one side, the crucified Christ and, on the other, Our Lady of Piety holding the body of Jesus. This representation is important, reflecting the devotion to Mary during the medieval era.
The cross was restored in 1938 and 1967, maintaining its structural and artistic integrity, and continues to be a religious and cultural landmark.
Classified as a National Monument, it is part of the Special Protection Zone of the Castle of Marvão, highlighting its historical and cultural relevance in the region.
The cross is one of the rare examples of Manueline art in Marvão, symbolizing the rich religious and cultural heritage of the area and attracting the attention of tourists and scholars.
