The Keep stands in the heart of the Sé area, in Portalegre, atop a hill dominating the surrounding houses. It is located next to the ancient medieval walls, in an area where narrow, cobbled streets emphasize the historic urban layout.

From its outer platform, an extensive view of the city unfolds, and on clear days, even the undulation of the Serra de São Mamede can be distinguished in the distance. The surroundings combine old buildings with some nearby green spaces, creating a tranquil atmosphere in an urban setting.

Origin and history

The original structure dates back to the 13th century, a time when the Portalegre region was strengthening its frontier defense. The tower was part of a castle built by Afonso III and expanded by King Dinis, having served as an observation point and a bastion against possible incursions.

With a quadrangular plan and thick granite stone walls, the Keep retains typical vestiges of medieval military architecture, such as arrowslits and merlons. Its silhouette, sharply defined against the horizon, reflects the strategic role it played in watching over the surroundings.

Perspective and atmosphere

Inside, a wooden staircase leads to the top, where a small observation platform is located. The open roof allows one to feel the freshness of the wind while observing the chimneys and balconies typical of the historic center.
