Over 180 years old, the Rossio Plane Tree was planted in 1838 at the suggestion of José Maria Grande, a notable botanist and physician native to Portalegre. Since then, this tree has become an unquestionable symbol of the locality, bearing witness to generations and marking the identity of the people of Portalegre. Its long history is deeply intertwined with the city's memories, making it a true botanical and cultural treasure.

It was the first tree in Portugal to be classified as being of "Public Interest" in 1939, bearing the title of "Living Monument" for several decades. In 2021, it was elected the winner of the national "Tree of the Year" competition, representing Portugal in the European contest.
