The Jardim da Corredoura is located in the Sé district, in the heart of Portalegre. Situated on an elevated plateau, it offers a unique perspective on the urban surroundings and the natural landscapes that encircle the city, namely the São Mamede and Penha mountains. Its central position and the way it integrates into the city's fabric make it an easily identifiable landmark.
This garden occupies a place with deep roots in the history of Portalegre. Its name, "Corredoura", refers to an ancestral function: in old Portuguese, it designated a wide and direct path, frequently used for horse races or for livestock trade, a common feature in old border cities. It was converted into a garden in the early 20th century, and over time it was also known by designations such as "Parque Miguel Bombarda" or "Cidade Jardim". Its history is intrinsically linked to the urban evolution and expansion of Portalegre, serving as an important access route to areas that extended beyond the old walls.
Walking through the Jardim da Corredoura, one observes a landscape that is the result of various interventions, always preserving the memory of the place. Its landscape design, which included the contribution of architects like Francisco Caldeira Cabral in the 1940s and a significant requalification in 2006, aims to preserve its distinctive elements. The majestic plane tree avenue, which crosses the garden, is one of its most recognizable features, and was adapted to provide pleasant strolls for visitors. Water features, such as tanks and a channel that simulates a small waterfall, enrich the environment. The presence of a varied mass of vegetation, with trees of heritage value, gives it the character of an essential green lung for the city.
The Jardim da Corredoura is more than a transit area; it is a meeting and leisure place for everyone. Its vast green area, comprising inviting lawns and pedestrian paths, is ideal for moments of relaxation and outdoor activities. The garden houses a memorial dedicated to the poet José Duro, which adds a cultural dimension to the space. In 2021, the garden was enriched with the construction of a skate park, a modern addition that attracts younger visitors and diversifies the available leisure options. It is a space that adapts to different urban experiences, serving as a setting for cultural events and a place for daily enjoyment.
