Located in the city of Portalegre, in the São Lourenço area, this remarkable construction stands on an elevated point of the urban area. The building is isolated in the center of a paved square, providing a distinct and tranquil environment. Pedestrian access is facilitated by a flight of stairs that leads directly to its entrance. In front of the main façade, a marble calvary stands out, resting on a quadrangular base, adorned with sculpted skulls, which gives the place a particular symbolism.
Its position offers a unique perspective on the urban surroundings of Portalegre, contributing to the city's landscape. This site is also located within the Serra de São Mamede Protected Area, highlighting its connection to the natural beauty of the region.
This religious building features Mannerist architecture, notable for its centralized Greek cross plan, with its arms symmetrically arranged. The exterior roof of the temple is marked by gabled roofs on the arms of the cross and a central dome, which is topped by a cupola, lending verticality and distinction to the ensemble. Inside, the dome rises, illuminated by four windows, and rests on four perfect arches, creating a harmonious space with great visual impact.
The exterior façade of this construction is embellished with various traditional tile panels, predominantly in shades of blue, yellow, and manganese. These panels depict vegetal and shell motifs, including scenes related to the Stations of the Cross, which visually enrich the exterior. Inside, the stucco decoration is noteworthy, with scrolls and vegetal motifs painted in white, blue, and orange, adorning the pendentives between the chapels. In the four corners of the central space, there are niches housing images. The entrance is enhanced by a wooden windbreak, artistically crafted with vegetal motifs and scrolls, culminating in a coat of arms that evokes the symbols of the Passion. The main chapel, with a rectangular plan, houses a panel depicting the Crucifixion and has a granite floor.
The history of this edifice dates back to the 18th century, although some interpretations suggest an even older origin. The site has strong ties to the ancient religious traditions of Portalegre, having once been the final destination of a procession that started from the city center. During this procession, it was common for penitents to express their faith in unique ways, such as carrying logs, stones, or chains. However, this practice was discontinued after a significant event that marked collective memory. A visit to this site offers an opportunity to understand a piece of the history and legends that shaped the region's spirituality.
