The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha is located in the São Lourenço area, in the city of Portalegre. Although situated in an urban context, it benefits from its own distinct atmosphere thanks to a small walled churchyard that precedes it. Access to this space is via a two-flight staircase, giving it a slightly elevated position in the landscape.
The origin of this site dates back to the 17th century. The construction of the chapel as we know it today resulted from the will of João Zuzarte da Fonseca, who held the position of corregedor (magistrate) in Portalegre. This chapel replaced a primitive hermitage that had already existed on the site since 1620. The construction of the current chapel was completed around 1635.
The chapel is an example of religious architecture with popular Baroque characteristics. Its main facade features a vertical composition, divided into two registers. The entrance portal, topped by a triangular pediment, is flanked by pilasters that add robustness to the building. In the upper section, a circular oculus allows light to enter. The chapel is topped by a small bell tower and decorative elements that contribute to its picturesque appearance.
Inside, the chapel consists of a single nave leading to the chancel. This slightly elevated space stands out for its dome-shaped ceiling. The dome ceiling is enriched with mural paintings illustrating the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, flanked by Christ and God the Father, and surrounded by angelic figures. In the chancel, one can also observe tile coverings, as well as two secondary altars.
Due to its historical and architectural importance, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha is classified as a Property of Public Interest. It maintains its religious function, serving as a point of reference and devotion in the city of Portalegre.
