The Bridge over the Monforte Stream (Ribeira de Monforte) is located on the outskirts of the town of Monforte, in Alentejo. It stands over the Monforte Stream, in a quiet and isolated area that invites landscape observation. The banks of the stream, with their varied vegetation, including olive groves and mature trees, offer a calm environment suitable for relaxing walks, away from the hustle and bustle.

A Historical Legacy

This ancient crossing has been the subject of study due to its history. Although popularly known as the Roman Bridge, its exact origin remains debated, with evidence suggesting construction or, at least, significant rehabilitation between the 2nd and 4th centuries. Documents from 1321 already refer to its existence, attesting to its longevity and importance for the region. The bridge has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1990, in recognition of its heritage value.

Architectural Details

The bridge is a remarkable granite masonry work, extending for approximately 63 meters. It is characterized by its seven perfect arches, which display a curious asymmetry: their heights and openings progressively decrease from the center towards the ends. The bridge deck has a slightly inclined profile, popularly known as "hog-backed", and is flanked by solid parapets. On the piers supporting the arches, salient structures are observed, known as cutwaters and starlings, designed to protect the bridge from the force of the water. Adjacent to the bridge, a quadrangular masonry tower stands out, painted white with yellow details, crowned by a pyramidal pinnacle.
