The Ajuda Bridge stands over the Guadiana River, in a quiet and isolated area, connecting the Portuguese territory of the municipality of Elvas, in the locality of Ajuda, to the opposite bank, where Olivença is located. This border location offers a serene perspective of the river and the Alentejo landscape, inviting a prolonged observation of the imposing ruins that stand out in the natural surroundings.
The Ajuda Bridge was ordered to be built by King Manuel I, in the early 16th century, with a vital strategic purpose: to ensure the connection between Elvas and Olivença and to guarantee Portuguese military support on the left bank of the Guadiana River. However, its history is marked by repeated destructions. After being damaged by floods in 1597, it was partially demolished by the Castilian army during the Restoration War in 1646. In 1709, in the context of the War of the Spanish Succession, the bridge was once again destroyed and, since then, it has remained in ruins, bearing witness to centuries of conflicts and border changes.
Originally, this monumental bridge extended for about three hundred and eighty meters in length and approximately five and a half meters in width. It was composed of nineteen arches and defended by a solid central tower, divided into three floors with rooms and windows, whose foundations can still be observed resting on large rocks. Although today it is in ruins, with only a few sections of arches on both sides of the river, its remaining structure still allows a glimpse of the grandeur of Manueline engineering and its importance in the past.
The Ajuda Bridge is more than just a ruin; it is a striking symbol of the history of relations between Portugal and Spain. Its silhouette, framed by the Guadiana, evokes a past where it was the only direct route between Elvas and Olivença, and its destruction marked an interruption in that connection. A short distance away, a more recent bridge was built to re-establish the crossing, but the old Ajuda Bridge remains a powerful monument to the resilience of time and a point of reflection on the historical legacies on the Alentejo border.
