The Sanctuary Park of Senhor Jesus da Piedade is located in the Piedade neighborhood, in Elvas, establishing itself in a peri-urban area, somewhat set apart from the city's historic center. This strategic position allows for a more open and vast environment, ideal for its historical and recreational function. Its location is easily identifiable and serves as an important landmark in the locality.
This vast green space stands out for its duality, combining a leisure area with a strong sanctuary character. It is a place that provides a tranquil environment, with inviting nooks for moments of rest and contemplation. Visitors discover a pleasant enclosure, with agreeable shaded areas, fresh air, and the coolness of its waters, characteristics that make it particularly welcoming and peaceful, valued by the inhabitants of Elvas themselves.
The park unfolds through different levels and zones. It includes a vast main esplanade, ideal for large gatherings, and an extensive avenue about 811 meters long, lined with plane trees, inviting leisurely strolls. The main entrance to the esplanade is marked by a staircase that elegantly compensates for the slight unevenness of the terrain. Visitors will also find a garden with a layout that follows natural forms, punctuated by a boxwood hedge and an organically shaped pond. To the south, an arboreal area organized into small terraces extends, where seating areas can be found.
At the heart of this park stands the Church of Senhor Jesus da Piedade, a notable example of 18th-century religious architecture, with a Baroque style that integrates national elements and influences from Central Europe and Brazil. Its façade, with two towers topped by peculiar domes, is an invitation to enter. The churchyard, designed to welcome pilgrims, displays tiles from the same century. Inside, the church reveals a single nave and an octagonal transept, enriched by polychrome marbles. In the side altars, it is possible to admire canvases painted by Cyrillo Volkmar Machado, which represent Our Lady of Grace and the Repentance of Saint Peter. A highly interesting aspect is the small museological nucleus in the sacristy, where a vast collection of ex-votos can be found, testifying to local devotion since 1737. The Sanctuary is classified as a Monument of Public Interest, attesting to its historical and artistic relevance.
The origin and expansion of this park are intrinsically linked to the devotion to Senhor Jesus da Piedade and the development of its pilgrimage, which attracted a growing number of faithful. The land it now occupies was gradually acquired and adapted over time, largely through donations, which demonstrates the community's strong connection to this place. Since 1931, the park has also become the main venue for the traditional Saint Matthew's Fair, an event with deep historical roots in the city of Elvas, consolidating its vocation as a space for gathering and cultural celebration.
