The Misericórdia Church of Nisa is situated in the Cevadeira Quarter, in the welcoming town of Nisa, within the district of Portalegre. Its position in the urban fabric offers an authentic perspective of local life, in a serene and traditional atmosphere that invites calm discovery.
The Misericórdia Church of Nisa is a remarkable example dating back to the 16th century, revealing in its construction the transition and coexistence of Renaissance and Neoclassical influences. The main façade, one of its most interesting features, boasts a carefully decorated portal, where columns and intricate geometric elements, characteristic of the period, stand out. At the top of the church, a belfry houses its bells, a distinctive element that punctuates the building's silhouette.
Inside, the church features a single nave that invites contemplation, covered by a vaulted ceiling that lends grandeur to the space. Above the entrance, the choir loft, elegantly supported by columns, occupies its traditional position. The main altar stands out for the grandeur of its eucharistic throne, a central point of devotion. Particularly noteworthy is the ceiling of the chancel, richly painted with floral patterns and the coat of arms of Portugal, which adds a touch of colour and symbolism to the sacred environment.
The artistic richness of the Misericórdia Church is evident in its various details. The meticulously carved woodwork adorns elements such as the pulpit and the governors' gallery, bearing witness to the mastery of the craftsmen of the period. The main altarpiece and various stone details, dating from the 18th century, complement the interior decoration with their delicacy and proportions. In addition to its architecture, the church is a guardian of valuable pieces of sacred art, including gilt silver crowns, which underline its historical relevance and the central role that the Holy House of Mercy played in the life of the Nisa community over the centuries.
