The Portalegre Municipal Museum is located in the heart of the city's historic center, in the area known as São Lourenço. Its location allows visitors to explore the museum as part of a tour through Portalegre's oldest and most significant areas, being integrated into an urban fabric of great heritage value.
The house that hosts the museum is, in itself, an important piece of local heritage. This building dates back to the 16th century and features architectural characteristics that attest to the nobility of the era in which it was built. Over the centuries, the space served various functions, adapting to the city's needs before becoming the museum in 1959, including a period when it operated as a Diocesan Seminary.
The museum houses a varied collection, largely resulting from generous private donations and the incorporation of pieces from former convents in the city, namely Santa Clara and São Bernardo. The collections cover different areas, providing insight into the arts and history of the region.
Among the exhibited pieces, highlights include collections of sacred art, reflecting the city's religious importance, as well as examples of antique furniture, painting, and Portuguese faience. One of the objects that captures attention due to its uniqueness is the first automobile to circulate in Portalegre, a Clément, Gladiator
