The Marvão Municipal Museum is located in the heart of the historic village, at its highest point. It occupies the building that was once the old Church of Santa Maria. Its central position within the walls facilitates access for those exploring the village and allows visitors to appreciate the characteristic surroundings of narrow streets and traditional houses.
The museum building is, in itself, a heritage piece. It is housed in what was the Church of Santa Maria, considered the oldest Catholic temple in the village, with origins dating back to the 13th century. The building preserves its original architectural features, offering a unique setting for the exhibition of its collection and inviting visitors to contemplate the history of the space even before discovering the collections.
The museum's collection offers a rich and varied overview of the region's history and culture. The permanent collections include testimonies from the distant past, with nuclei of archaeology revealing human presence since prehistory. There are also sections dedicated to ethnography, showcasing the traditions, crafts, and ways of life of the people of the municipality over time. Sacred art and various historical remnants complete the exhibition, allowing for a journey through local memory, from its origins to more recent times.
A significant part of the pieces that make up the museum's collection results from the generosity of the inhabitants of Marvão and the municipality themselves. Over the years, the local community has contributed objects and artifacts that were part of their family and daily history. This popular collaboration has enriched the collection, making the museum a true repository of collective identity and a reflection of the Marvanenses' connection to their heritage.
