The João Carpinteiro Municipal Photography Museum is located in the heart of the Historic Centre of Elvas. It is situated in Largo Luís de Camões, a central square that invites exploration on foot. Finding this space is part of the stroll through the city's historic area.
This museum offers a perspective on the evolution of photography, both globally and with a particular focus on Elvas. It brings together a vast collection of cameras, the result of João Carpinteiro's passion. In addition to the equipment, the collection includes a digitized image bank that portrays different facets of life in the city over time, from military and religious aspects to local events and monuments.
Beyond the exhibition areas, the museum integrates spaces dedicated to the practice and study of photography. It has a laboratory prepared for black and white photo development, demonstrating a fundamental process in the history of photographic technique. It is complemented by a specialized library in the field, serving as a source of information and in-depth study for all interested parties.
The building housing the Photography Museum has its own history within the city. It is installed where the "Cinema Central" of Elvas once operated. This adaptation gave a new cultural purpose to a space that was already part of local memory, having been inaugurated with its museological function in 2003.
