Located in the heart of the Historic Centre of Nisa, the Museum of Embroidery and Clay occupies traditional buildings near the medieval walls. The surrounding narrow, cobbled streets highlight the continuity between the museum's collection and the urban fabric in which it is set.
In the vicinity, there are traces of traditional Alentejo architecture, allowing visitors to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and details such as stonework doorways and barred windows, which line the path to the main building, housed in the former 'Cadeia Nova' (New Prison).
The museum preserves two of Nisa's most authentic forms of expression: embroidery and 'olaria pedrada' (pebble-inlaid pottery). The embroidery features patterns inspired by local flora and fauna, crafted by experienced hands that have passed down this knowledge from generation to generation. These fine stitches were part of the trousseau of young women from Nisa, later becoming a source of income.
The pebble-inlaid pottery uses three types of clay (white, black, and red) sourced from areas near the town. The inlaying technique involves embedding small white quartz fragments into the raw clay, creating defined grooves that highlight geometric or natural designs, a feature that distinguishes these pieces in the Alentejo region.
With a multi-site layout, the museum offers a route that passes through the Central Nucleus, which displays the most historically and artistically significant pieces, and through neighbouring buildings adapted to house pottery workshops and temporary exhibition rooms. Multimedia applications help explain the manufacturing processes.
The Embroidery section is located in a former traditional home, recreating a typical Nisa bedroom and showcasing tools from rural daily life. Nearby, the future Documentation Centre and restoration workshop promise to connect visitors and researchers to the living heritage of these arts.
