The Elvas Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the heart of the city's Historic Centre, an area classified as a World Heritage site. The building has a notable street presence, with its ground-level windows creating a visual connection with the outside, almost acting as a display window for passers-by.
The museum occupies a building with a long history, which once served as the Misericórdia Hospital. This construction possesses significant architectural value, and during its adaptation to house the museum, efforts were made to maintain the quality of the original spaces and relevant structural elements. The result is an environment that combines the building's historical heritage with the necessary functionality for a space dedicated to contemporary art.
The museum's main collection consists of the António Cachola Collection, a private collection of contemporary Portuguese art deposited here, making it accessible to the public. This collection spans works created from the 1980s to the present day, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video. It offers a perspective on national artistic production from this period. Among the exhibited works, Joana Vasconcelos' well-known piece "The Bride" stands out.
Within the museum, there is a particular space designated as the Noble Hall or Auditorium. This area preserves beautiful 18th-century tile panels, painted in blue and white, dating back to 1740, bearing witness to past interventions in the historic building. For a break, there is a cafeteria area on the upper floor, which offers visitors a panoramic view over the historic city of Elvas, allowing them to appreciate the surrounding urban landscape.
