The Monastery of the Hermits of Saint Paul, also known as the Church of Saint Anthony, is located in the heart of the town of Sousel. Its central position, in Largo do Convento, naturally integrates it into the urban fabric, making it a landmark for those traversing the town centre. Its presence marks the local landscape, bearing witness to centuries of history.
This architectural complex had its genesis in the 17th century, as a male monastery. Founded by the Order of the Hermits of Saint Paul, known as Paulistas, the space was conceived for monastic life, reflecting the religious ideals and architecture of the period. Over the centuries, the site adapted, maintaining its function as a place of worship, with the church playing a central role in the community.
The church, today a Monument of Public Interest, stands out for its 17th-century architectural expression. Its interior offers a glimpse into the artistic richness of the period, where attention to detail is evident. The preservation of this heritage has been a continuous effort, with recent interventions aimed at the conservation and restoration of elements such as the altars and the sacristy chest, allowing one to appreciate the mastery of the artisans of the time. These elements contribute to an environment of contemplation and admiration for the cultural legacy the space embodies.
