The area known as Foros do Mocho, in the locality of Montargil, municipality of Ponte de Sor, has its main access marked by a water crossing. This structure, which functions as both a road and a weir, crosses an arm of the Montargil Dam, connecting the area to National Road 2 and the rest of the territory. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the vast surface of the reservoir, offering a characteristic scenic and riverside setting.
The history of this passage over the reservoir dates back to the late 1950s. It was built at the same time as the Montargil Dam, becoming since then the vital access point for the locality of Foros do Mocho. The structure serves a dual purpose, functioning as a road for vehicular traffic and as a weir, integrating into the management of water resources associated with the dam.
The access structure to Foros do Mocho has undergone a significant intervention in recent years. The original pontoon, an integral part of the site since the dam's construction, was damaged in late 2022, interrupting the main connection. Following this event, a new crossing was built to re-establish access to the locality.
The new passage was designed with durability and safety in mind, incorporating more robust engineering techniques. A relevant aspect for visitors is the inclusion of a pedestrian walkway on the upstream side, which allows safe crossing and enjoyment of the view over the Montargil reservoir, a central element in the landscape of this area of Alentejo.
The location of the access structure to Foros do Mocho, directly over the Montargil reservoir, is set within a natural environment of particular interest. This area is part of the reservoir's protection zone. The aquatic surroundings and the characteristic landscape of the region provide a tranquil setting, conducive to nature observation and contemplation of the expanse of water that stretches along this arm of the dam.
