The Chapel of Calvary is located in the Santa Maria de Marvão area, nestled in the lower part of Marvão village, within its ancient walls. It sits atop granite outcrops, adapting to the sloping terrain. It opens onto a small square paved with cobblestones, where garden benches are found, offering a tranquil and inviting space for a break while exploring the village.
This small chapel was built in 1804, during the 19th century, and has maintained its religious use since its origin. It features a quadrangular plan, but with its angles slightly truncated, giving it a unique shape. Its roof is characterized by a blind dome, which rises above a drum, complemented by a hemispherical volume above and a single-pitch roof on the remaining part of the chapel's body.
Its facades, plastered and painted white, stand out for their simplicity. The main facade, oriented southeast, has a portal with a straight lintel and a simple frame, accessed by granite steps. Above the portal, there is a discreet niche. The remaining facades are plain, without openings, contributing to its solid and serene appearance.
The Chapel of Calvary, with its distinct profile and the purity of its white walls, integrates harmoniously into Marvão's urban and natural landscape. Although modest, its presence contributes to the beauty and identity of the village. It is a place that invites careful observation of its architectural features and contemplation of the surrounding environment, marked by the robustness of the granite and the calm of the cobblestone.
