The Sume Bridge is located next to the small eponymous locality, in the municipality of Gavião. It crosses the Sume stream in a section surrounded by agricultural terraces and patches of Mediterranean vegetation, offering a rural and serene setting.
Access is via secondary paths, which ensures a minimally intervened environment. In the vicinity, granite outcrops accompany the bank, creating tranquil observation points away from urban hustle.
The bridge rests on a natural rock formation, a result of the erosion of a granite outcrop where the stream flows out. This ingenious solution utilized the granite blocks as a base, without the need for megalithic interventions.
Although there are no exact records of its construction date, it is estimated to have emerged to facilitate the mobility of shepherds and farmers in the region. Maintenance over the years has kept its original characteristics intact, revealing a trace of the rural past.
During periods of higher flow, the stream forms a natural “dam” between the granite blocks, creating small sheets of water and gentle cascades. This phenomenon alters the landscape and offers different glimpses depending on the season.
The surrounding flora is dominated by cork oaks and Mediterranean shrubs, which grow in the granite fissures. The murmur of water in contact with the rock and the song of riparian birds complete the experience of connecting with nature.
