The Maranhão Dam is situated in the Alcórrego and Maranhão area, forming part of the landscape of the municipality of Avis. It was built on the bed of the Ribeira de Seda, a tributary of the Tagus River basin. Its vast reservoir dominates the geographical surroundings, creating an aquatic landmark in the area.
Completed in 1957, the dam represents an engineering achievement of its time. It rises to a height of 49 meters above the natural ground and its crest extends for approximately 204 meters. It is an embankment type structure, designed to create a robust and durable barrier that allows for the accumulation of a large quantity of water.
The presence of the dam gave rise to an extensive reservoir covering approximately 1960 hectares. This vast body of water transforms the local landscape, offering expansive aquatic views. With considerable capacity, this artificial body of water is a site of natural interest and also serves as a reference point for activities related to the aquatic environment, such as sport fishing.
Beyond its visual impact on the landscape, the Maranhão Dam was built with fundamental purposes for the region. Its primary function is the storage of essential water for irrigating agricultural fields and for generating electricity through its hydroelectric power plant. It thus plays an important role in supporting local economic and energy activities.
